And, congrats, Bo!"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\">First off, a big Congrats to my friend Bo, who just passed\u00c2\u00a0his seaplane add-on rating checkride!\u00c2\u00a0 Bo works as a pilot for NetJets, and he recently spent some time with us, having a lot of fun. \ud83d\ude42<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seattleseaplanes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMG_1094.jpg\"><\/a>\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.seattleseaplanes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/toby-and-bo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-151\" title=\"toby and bo\" src=\"https:\/\/www.seattleseaplanes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/toby-and-bo-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seattleseaplanes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/toby-and-bo-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.seattleseaplanes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/toby-and-bo-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.seattleseaplanes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/toby-and-bo.jpg 582w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hey &#8211; did you know that in addition to flying seaplanes, my &#8216;dad&#8217; is also an apiarist?\u00c2\u00a0 A <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Beekeeping\" target=\"_blank\">beekeeper<\/a>, that is?<\/p>\n<dl id=\"attachment_147\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 310px;\">\n<dt class=\"wp-caption-dt\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seattleseaplanes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMG_1076.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-147\" title=\"IMG_1076\" src=\"https:\/\/www.seattleseaplanes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMG_1076-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seattleseaplanes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMG_1076-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.seattleseaplanes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMG_1076-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/dt>\n<dd class=\"wp-caption-dd\">Hive security, with my friend Becky<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>It&#8217;s true.\u00c2\u00a0 We have our own bee society, right here on the dock next to the airplanes.\u00c2\u00a0My dad &#8216;Jim&#8217; takes care of the bees, feeding them, providing them with calming smoke, and just keeping his eye on them.\u00c2\u00a0 And every so often, they reward us with delicious honey (well, the humans are rewarded.\u00c2\u00a0 I don&#8217;t get to eat the honey&#8230;. usually)<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a complex business, beekeeping.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s all about the bees&#8217; devotion to their Queen Bee; the queen is surrounded by worker bees and drones.\u00c2\u00a0 The queen lays thousands of eggs, and the workers keep things buzzing (heh) in the hives.\u00c2\u00a0 The workers (female) do all the work; the drones (male) hang around to fertilize eggs and mate with new queens.<\/p>\n<p>And, of course, the by-product of all the work is the delicious honey, the result of the bees&#8217; gathering nectar &amp; sweetness from nearby flowers and plants.
