PuppyToby

A close-up of me at a handful of weeks old

Some of you have wondered if we have any pictures of me as a puppy.  Well…. I have one, taken with my brothers and sisters when we were still growing together at Sherluck Kennels. Aren’t we a handsome bunch?

Here we all are - the zoom-out of the other picture

We were all lucky to go to happy homes. Just a friendly reminder from the dog world for you, if you’re considering getting a pup of your own. If you want a purebred dog, please make sure your pup comes from a reputable breeder (like our original ‘mom’ Faye Strauss at Sherluck Dobermans!)  Or, another super, super idea is visiting your local animal shelter, or using Pet Finder to find the doggie (or cat, or other pet!) of your dreams.

That’s about it for now.  Happy pups to all!

Cheers,

Toby James

First Solo!

Congratulations, Daniel Strong!

Congrats to my pal Daniel!

My pilot friends tell me that perhaps the most exciting flight of all is the first time you fly the airplane all by yourself…. it’s a huge milestone on the way to becoming a pilot, and it’s a day that no pilot ever forgets.

This week, my pal Daniel had his first solo!  He’s a local Seattleite, no stranger to the water or the air. He’s known for keeping his cool, (with a rather dry sense of humor underneath) but I know he was excited about this day. It was a big day for Daniel’s instructor, Greg, as well.

The path to getting your pilot license includes (obviously) the first solo flight.  Now, Daniel will start planning cross-country flights, and other tasks on his way to earning his full private pilot certificate. Did you know that Seattle Seaplanes is one of the only places (if not THE only place) in the USA where you can earn your private pilot certificate from the start?

I’m waiting to join YOU next down on our dock here at Seattle Seaplanes!

We had some super nice days here at 0W0 this week – it may be fall, but there’s still sunshine to be had in the Pacific Northwest! It’s really a great time to go flying, what with the pretty fall colors, the water, and the mountains.

Here’s a picture from one of our flights – looking northeast from the Hood Canal Bridge. (No, I didn’t take the picture myself. Nor was I in the plane at the time. But I love looking at the pictures afterwards!)

Hood Canal Bridge

I saw two of my favorite people this week:  Bridget and Henrietta!  They’re both commercial pilots who earned their airplane single-engine seaplane (ASES) ratings from Seattle Seaplanes earlier this year.

Two of my favorite flying ladies

We’re changing to Pacific Standard Time on Sunday Nov 7, so the hours of daylight are shorter and shorter. It’s a great time of year to go flying, though – the airplanes love the cool, dense air, and our pilots love showing you how much fun it is to fly off of (and onto) water.

Holidays are coming!  I’m just saying……

See you soon, I hope!

Cheers,

Toby James

Fall comes to Lake Union

Well, the weather is changing in our little corner of Seattle (and beyond)  I admit I don’t like going outside quite as much when it’s pouring rain!  Fortunately, it’s not doing that yet (very much, that is!)  But, the leaves are turning, and it’s getting darker earlier and earlier….

We had some fantastic, fit visitors this week!  My pal PJ Glassey, who learned to fly here at Seattle Seaplanes, stopped by with a bunch of his “stepbrothers and stepsisters,”  and my friend Kit took them up for scenic flights!  They (including Kit) had just completed the American Lung Association’s Fight For Air Stairclimb over in Bellevue.  PJ’s team, “Xgym Wins Again,” raised over $3,000 for the cause, and were the fastest to the top, too!   Several of the athletes are ranked as the top competitive stairclimbers in the world, and I loved meeting world-class athletes.  They’re pretty good at playing tug-of-war with me and my orange toy bone!

(by the way, that’s PJ flexing his muscles on the top of our Flight Training page)

Here I am with my pal PJ, and alll his stairclimbing buddies

Because I have four legs, it would take me a while to climb the stairs, so I’m going to leave it to the experts!

Meanwhile, this week, we had visitors from Romania, England, and many other places.  The weather may be turning, but it’s still a great day to fly!

We also had a flight up to Mt. Rainier – isn’t it gorgeous?

So, the weather may be turning, but we’re still flying. Come see Seattle from above!  (no stairclimbing required!)

Toby James

Check out our new sign!

Our new sign!

Hey, everybody!

Thanks for reading my blog! It’s a gorgeous fall day here at Seattle Seaplanes, and we have a great new sign to show off!  Now, when you humans are walking, biking, or driving along Fairview Ave. E, you’ll see an iconic image of Mt. Rainier and a seaplane, with our name in great big red letters.

Yeah, we fly to Mt. Rainier. Mt. St. Helens, too. And the San Juan Islands. And just about anywhere else you can think of in the Pacific Northwest!

SQUIRREL!!!

Oh, sorry, I got distracted there for a minute…. anyway, you get the point.  We have a pretty new sign, and you should come see it. And come see me!

See ya on the Lake! (or as I like to call it, “Lake Tobegon”)

cheers,

Toby James

Welcome to Toby’s Dog Blog

Here I am amongst the flower beds at our dock. See the Space Needle in the background?

So, let me introduce myself.  My full name is Toby James Chrysler, although most people just call me “Toby” or “Tobes.” I’m a Doberman Pinscher, and I’m about five years old (which is considered a ‘young adult’ in dog years).  I’ve been an important part of the Seattle Seaplanes family for all my life! I’m the staff psychologist, the congeniality officer, and I provide hive security for my “dad” Jim’s honeybees.

Now that we have this spiffy new website, I’m going to post occasional blog entries about life here on Lake Union. We’re always up to something here at Seattle Seaplanes, and I want to share it with you. Better yet, why don’t you come take a flight with us and see for yourself?

You may be asking:  a blog?  from a dog?  I say, “why not?”  I have a unique perspective on life at Seattle Seaplanes, and, besides, Dobermans are in the top five of the smartest dogs.  And, I’m a very expressive dog with a lot to say!

A few notes about myself:

  • I’ve got a “little brother” at home: Oliver Murphy. He’s a Dachshund, and sometimes he comes to Seattle Seaplanes, too.
  • No, I’ve never been in an airplane, but I love to ride in the truck! Or car.
  • I’m really quite friendly!
  • There are few things in this world I love more than my toy orange bone.

Oliver Murphy

Here's my "brother from another mother," Oliver

That’s about it for now!  Come see me at Seattle Seaplanes!!

Cheers,

Toby James
